“You’ve got families here risking their lives for our country and their kids unfortunately are brought into that,” he said. “They have no say so in where they are going to go. It’s hard to have a normal life when your family is in the (military). I just wanted to come and show these kids that just because they’re here doesn’t mean we don’t care. We care about them. We care about their families. We’re thankful for what their families are doing for our country and allowing someone like me to go play the game of basketball freely. It was important to me.” - Marcus Smart
Our first program for over 200 military families at Fort Cavazos, TX in 2023 was a huge success. While the children were participating in the intense all day basketball clinic, we did not want to waste an opportunity to engage their parents/guardians with our mindfulness program. We made the program a place to feel comfortable to talk. No one is forced to do so but we found out everybody did want to in our surroundings. There were tears of joy and sadness which brought these families together by hearing similar stories from others in their community that they had not had much interaction with. Our mental health instructor, Hania Khuri-Trapper, customized her presentation for the adults, including tools to manage stress, breathing techniques, book talk and readings, journaling exercises, meditation and gentle yet strengthening yoga. See you again in 2024!

Rhode Island: PASA-Providence After School Alliance-Learning has to continue outside of school, with music lessons, sports, academic support, and other activities. Unfortunately, students from under-served communities, who typically have the greatest need for additional enrichment, are least likely to get it. They also are less likely to know about the world around them — that they live a mile from the ocean, can visit their city’s museums, and are welcome to walk through a nearby college campus. PASA fills these critical gaps. Expanded learning teaches students about academics, collaboration, and problem-solving. Students not only learn how to do better in school, they find new ways to ignite their passions — and to engage in learning and life. www.mypasa.org
